It has been reported in the media, both here in the UK and in the USA, that Hypnotherapy is a very effective cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

The following is a report by the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA January 2005.

"Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, distension, and an altered bowel habit for which no cause can be found. Despite its prevalence, there remains a significant lack of efficacious medical treatments for IBS to date. In this paper we reviewed a total of 14 published studies on the efficacy of hypnosis in treating IBS (8 with no control group and 6 with a control group). We concluded that hypnosis consistently produces significant results and improves the cardinal symptoms of IBS in the majority of patients, as well as positively affecting non-colonic symptoms. When evaluated according to the efficacy guidelines of the Clinical Psychology Division of American Psychological Association, the use of hypnosis with IBS qualifies for the highest level of acceptance as being both efficacious and specific."

This success has also been reported by other institutions and media companies such as.

About Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions, It causes pain in the abdomen and an altered bowel habit.

It is estimated that 10-20% of the UK's population is affected by IBS at any one time, although this figure may be higher because many people with the condition do not report their symptoms to their GP.

IBS is twice as common in women as it is in men. The condition normally develops in people who are between 20 and 30 years of age, but it can affect people of any age.

Symptoms

Some people find the condition seriously affects their quality of life. Most people with IBS continue to get symptoms from time to time. The symptoms include the following.

  1. Pain. The most common symptom of IBS is pain or discomfort in the abdomen. The pain may be mild to severe, and may be made either better or worse by opening the bowels, passing wind or eating.

  2. Change in bowel habits

  3. The IBS sufferer may find their bowel habit alternates between constipation and diarrhoea. Afterwards, you may feel that your bowels haven't been completely emptied.

  4. Other symptoms include a bloated abdomen.

  5. Passing excess wind.

  6. Feeling sick and indigestion.

  7. Some people also experience a sense of fullness.

  8. Stomach cramps.

  9. Rumbling stomach noise.

  10. Fatigue.

  11. Headache.

  12. Depression.

  13. Backache.

  14. Muscular pains.

  15. Heart burn.

NB. Passing blood is not a symptom of IBS. You should consult with your GP if you pass blood.

Causes

The medical profession have for many years known that the cause of IBS was not physiological but psychological or psychosomatic.

The root cause of IBS, like many other illnesses, is anxiety. Left untreated IBS does cause the sufferer to have bouts of depression.

IBS is a chronic illness that tends to get worse over time and stress exacerbates the symptoms. Stress may result from work anxieties, relationship difficulties or life events such as divorce or bereavement.

Depending upon its severity, IBS can really impact your day-to-day life, making it impossible to attend social functions, go to work, or even travel short distances away from home. It can even ruin your sex life, during an intimate moment, the last thing most people are worried about is whether or not they will have to interrupt the mood and make an emergency run to the bathroom.

Treatment for IBS

If you are someone who suffers with IBS, you will also know only too well that the symptoms can be notoriously difficult to treat successfully. Despite this, there are many cures and treatments available these include a large number of medications, herbal treatments, dietary changes and restrictions and exercises.

However, the disappointing reality for IBS sufferers is that of the many treatments listed above, which are variable and often disappointing in their treatment outcomes, all aim to treat the symptoms, rather than removing or resolving the root cause of the IBS. This will mean that the person will always likely to have a susceptibility to IBS, the symptoms of which could be moderated with treatments, but that may always return.

Here at Positively Hypnotherapy Leigh on Sea we have substantial experience of helping people to rid themselves of problematic IBS and related symptoms using The thrive Programme or pure hypnoanalysis and find that symptoms usually disappear within 6 to10 sessions depending on the therapy chosen.

Unlike taking medication the thrive Programme and pure hypnoanalysis have no side effects, only added benefits such as boosting confidence and improving your well-being. We endeavour to make you feel at ease so that you feel comfortable and free to talk about your symptoms in a a friendly environment. We understand how difficult it can be to talk about IBS and to seek help, but if you would like to rid yourself of IBS and resolve any related emotional issues forever, we are confident that we can help you.

N.B. Before engaging in any course of treatment for IBS, it is advisable to seek medical advice to ensure all other possible causes of your symptoms have been ruled out.
